Fighting poverty with Hugh Evans

From a tender age, Evans has been involved in charitable work. He has dedicated his entire life to fight poverty and helped the less privileged ones. He believes is not enough to make people aware that there are over 1 billion human beings living under disastrous conditions; to him the most important thing is to fight it, to put it to an end.

Fighting poverty with Hugh Evans

When Evans was 14 years old, he embarked into what he believe was going to be an adventure. He arrived at a village called Manila, a poor area located in the Philippine capital. He spent the night at a place called Smokey Mountain with one of the regions scavengers. This area is in fact a garbage dump, totally polluted and filled with toxic gases rising from the decaying garbage piles. That night he realized it was just a matter of chance that he was born under better conditions.

Hugh Evans was born on March 4, 1983 in Melbourne, Australia. He graduated at Monash University with law and science degrees in 2008. At the age of 20 years old he founded The Oaktree Foundation along with Nicolas Mackay. This non-government Australian organization is run by young individuals (16 – 26 years old) and provides assistance to Asian and African countries in need.

In 2008 the Global Poverty Project was created by Evans and Simon Moss, this community group focuses on growing awareness and engaging a fight against extreme poverty. Evans has been awarded several times: in 2003 with the Young Victorian of the Year award, a year later with the Outstanding Young Persons of the World title and more.

Evans knows altruism has its limits, in 2009 he decided to combine charity with music; with the help of others he organized the first Global Citizen Festival that is still ongoing today. Some of the performers have been: Alicia Keys, Kings of Leon, Stevie Wonder and more.
