Orlando Bloom, an actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador

He was born in Canterbury, England in 1977. He was raised surrounded by arts along with his sister; he recited poetry and decided from a young age that he wanted to be an actor. Bloom first studied drama at the British American Drama Academy and then at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, at age 16 he moved to London and joined for two seasons in the National Youth Theatre.

In 1999, he was cast as Legolas in The Lord of the Rings trilogy, it was his breakthrough role. He has participated in over 17 films, including: Pirates of the Caribbean, Black Hawk Down, The Kingdom of Heaven, Elizabethtown, Troy, The Legend Begins and Haven.

Throughout all these years Bloom has alternated his studies and his roles. He has enjoyed a successful film career full of appearances in films that stand out for their quality, some of which have had big impact at the box office worldwide. Today we can say that movies are what has brought Orlando Bloom international fame.

Orlando was appointed Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF on October 12, 2009, in recognition of his commitment to the rights of children around the world. Bloom has supported UNICEF since 2007, when he visited schools in the western districts of Kaski and Chitwan, two of the poorest areas in Nepal. He spoke about the importance of education and was able to see how the UNICEF water programs have assisted local families and children. At the request of some children, Bloom agreed to perform a small role in their local school radio program.

He also visited the Krasnoselsky center in Moscow, a shelter for children from economically vulnerable families. In 2008, Bloom went to Sarajevo to see firsthand the situation of children in the country. This year during his visit to Ukraine, the actor met students who are receiving counseling by UNICEF, who help them, among other things, to recover from the distressing experiences of the conflict.
